Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney5/13/2023 ![]() It’s a credit to Feeney that these revelations remain impactful and meaningful, despite the fact that the reader will quickly begin regarding each new tidbit with suspicion. Feeney also frequently drops in letters written to Adam by his wife commemorating several of their anniversaries.Įvery chapter - nearly every page - brings some new information, a revelation that changes the way the reader views the characters. Rock Paper Scissors is built of short chapters, each one presenting one of three points-of-view: Adam, Amelia, and a late entry in the form of a mysterious woman named Robin. ![]() This is my first time reading one of her novels, so I can’t vouch for the others, but misdirection doesn’t begin to cover it here. I’m told that misdirection is a trademark of Feeney’s work. They’ve grabbed their dog Bob and headed to a remote chapel-turned-bread-and-breakfast in the Scottish Highlands, where they hope to spend a snowy weekend piecing their faltering marriage back together., If you’re guessing that the only thing that holds more secrets than the Wrights is a remote chapel in the Scottish Highlands, you’re absolutely Wright. ![]() The troubled couple at the center of her new novel, Rock Paper Scissors, are the Wrights, Adam and Amelia. ![]()

The hungry moon ramsey campbell5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title. Preferred Choice Book Club Selection Troll Book Club alternate.Ĭopyright 1986 Reed Business Information, Inc. This horror story is beautifully written, populated with well-realized characters and pervaded by an increasingly chilling atmosphere of dread and anxiety. And within this isolation, the monster's power grows umimpeded. Slowly Moonwell is isolated from the world, as telephone lines break down, a cloud cover brings continuous darkness, watches and clocks stop, roads mysteriously lead nowhere. What emerges from the pit is the monstrous creature, clothed now in the flesh of Mann, and it is only the town's pariahs who can see that something is radically wrong, that an evil has been unleashed on the community. Intending to exorcise the demon and claim the land for God, he is instead overwhelmed. Mann descends into the pit in which the ancient malignant being worshipped by the Druids millenia past is said to dwell. From the start, the shadow of religious dogmatism rears its ugly head, setting the stage for a tale in which the dangers of blind faith take a supernatural turn. They rally almost as one behind him and ostracize and persecute the few independent souls who do not. It's clear why Ramsey Campbell is known as the Godfather of HorrorThe Hungry Moon is an exercise in dread. To Moonwell comes the preacher Godwin Mann, whose particularly intolerant brand of fundamentalism appeals to the inhabitants. ![]() ![]() Campbell's seventh novel is set in Northern England, in the small bleak town of Moonwell, edged by moors pitted with treacherous mineshafts. ![]()

A plague year5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() The gloss on the title of God's Terrible Voice assumes the equal prominence of the two disasters. ![]() The bulk of the treatise, some hundred and fifty pages, is thereafter devoted to explaining the meaning of the plague and fire of London. This general overview of disaster quickly gives way to brief accounts of first the plague of 1665, then the fire of 1666. An early section of the treatise considers the characteristics of plague and fire against the general background of disaster-or, in Vincent's more frequently used expression, "judgements." Vincent lists seven kinds of "terrible speakings" in this introductory catalogue-plague, deluge, fire, sword, famine, "famine of the world," and "terrible things together." Each disaster receives a short explication according to its role in the Bible. ![]() Thomas Vincent's treatise, God's Terrible Voice in the City (1667), one of the major sources for Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year, 2) places the association between the plague and the fire at the core of its message. For many, indeed, the plague and fire became two strokes of a single catastrophic blow. 1) It did not take long for writers to draw associations between the two events. The Great Fire of 1666 occurred less than a year after the most deadly months of the plague epidemic had afflicted London. ![]()
